Profile

Alfonso Cárcamo, the founder and webmaster of Canucklinks.com, has a culturally-rich and diverse, yet humble background. He hails from El Salvador, the tiniest nation in Central America, a country roughly thirty times smaller - and poorer - than the province of Alberta.

The fourth of six children, he was born in a tiny coffee plantation, a place hardly accessible to run-of-the mill city dwellers. He grew up very close to nature, in the tooth-and-claw environment where the term ‘consumer electronics’ would be as foreign as ‘Maple Syrup’ would be to the natives in the Amazon jungles.

Forced to flee the country as a result of the looming civil war in 1979, his family settled in Belize, a former British colony, which although culturally a Caribbean nation, geographically speaking it is a Central American country.

Raised amongst venomous serpents - a few that crawled, others that walked, - vicious boars and wild life in the virgin and unexplored mountains of this tiny country, he was exposed to the native Mayas, and to the African-born customs that had somehow survived the onslaught of over four hundred years of British and Spanish influence.

In 1983, at the tender age of fifteen, he was rewarded with the opportunity to migrate to the cold country. His family settled in Calgary, Alberta, where he would complete his high school education, to then pursue a university career.

Upon completion of a B.A. in Arts, majoring in French translation and literature, he chose to tour the country from corner to corner, beginning in the beautiful city of Vancouver, then temporarily settling in “la belle province du Quebec”, and eventually settling in Toronto, his present home for the past fifteen years.
