First and foremost, congratulations to our friends from Cameroon, "The Toronto Lions", and the Portuguese Soccer Club for having won the Saturday and Sunday championships respectively!
Indeed, Saturday’s performance turned out to be a complete success for "The Toronto Lions" initially defeating Real Madrid in its own turf, and subsequently defeating decisively Club Guadalajara 4-1.
Sunday’s victory by the Portuguese Soccer Club was much harder won, the champions having crowned themselves through penalty shots throughout all their matches. Nevertheless, we acknowledge their accomplishments, as first place is first place regardless of the means of getting there.
Our friends from Iraq are very highly commended for having demonstrated superior skill by not conceding an easy defeat to the Portuguese Soccer Club. The match ended on a 2-2 draw, and the winner was decided by penalty shots at the end.
Similar mention is deserved by Real Madrid for their initial victory against Mexico: 3-0.
Subsequently, they proved to be an even more dreadful adversary in their match against the Portuguese Soccer Club by dominating the match till the last ten minutes when an unlucky penalty awarded to the Portuguese brought the game to a 3-3 tie.
Again, in the penalty shots, the victory was conceded to the Portuguese despite Real Madrid’s domination till the last ten minutes of the match.
Last but not least is Mexico’s stellar performance. Although initially defeated by Real Madrid 3-0, Mexico held their own against the Iraqis leading the match 4-1 till near the end when the Iraqi opposition scored two goals that brought the final score to 4-3.
And if the Portuguese were unable to defeat Iraq in the field, the question remains: who shall be the victor when Mexico faces the Portuguese in the near future?
Stay tuned for further developments!
Since the onset of our League at the beginning of May, we have had unprecedented success by creating an informal soccer league that has now seen the participation of over ten different teams as follows:
1. "The Toronto Lions"
2. El Salvador
3. Portuguese Soccer Club
4. Club Iraq
5. Roberto Ben’s All Stars
6. Creg’s Super Team
7. Club Guadalajara
8. Real Madrid (white)
9. Real Madrid (black)
10. Brasil
11. Mexico
Our league boasts the participation of athletes who formerly performed at a professional level, such as Mexico’s daredevil goalie, Gerca, who was catching balls for Croatia while I was still in diapers!
The Portuguese Soccer Club contracted our star, Julio, who several decades ago played in El Salvador’s first division star team, “Once Lobos”. As captain to his team, Julio has proven his leadership by propelling his team to the very top.
But, as fortune dictates, it is our Real Madrid that has been privileged to welcome a star player still in his prime, 27-year old Osvaldo Gomez, a Nicaraguan-born footballer who in his youth played in Costa Rica’s Juvenile first division, and was slated to join the country’s selection, had it not been for his migration to Canada.
Osvaldo has lived up to his reputation crowning himself top goal scorer of our league with 24 goals in 19 games of our 21 matches thus far.
Although it is individual players that ultimately make up a soccer league, it is the brains and masterminds behind the scenes who get the show on the road by coordinating the actual championships.
We would not be where we are today were it not for the selfless dedication and efforts of our team directors, coaches, volunteer referees and linesmen who have taken us to where we are today.
We wish to acknowledge all your contributions for making our Soccer a fun-filled, injury-free activity of which we can all be proud!
