The search for true Canadian content

Sometimes, you need to weed out American clutter.

Last week, we looked at Canadian shopping sites. Now, let's move on to Canadian search engines and directories.

Of course, biggies like Yahoo, Alta Vista and AOL all have Canadian versions. While doing a Google search, you can click on "pages from Canada." And Google.ca offers pages in French. The fabulous and comprehensive About directory weighs in with www.canadaonline.about.com.

The question is: How Canadian are the links? Even the homegrown directories listed here are all over the map.

One purist is www.cantrek. com. Its mission is to link only to sites that are 100 per cent Canadian. (It should add redesign to that mission; it's not very eye-friendly.) Here are some others, with varying degrees of Canadian content.

SITE-SEEING www.canadiantopsites.com: Fairly new. It lets surfers vote on and rate sites.

www.canucklinks.com: Includes handy ethnic directories.

www.geocities.com/heartland/ridge/4687/indexab.html: Canadian Friendly Index, with recipes, classifieds, online casinos, job search, shopping and freebies.

www.windfall.ca: One focus is business news and links. A major update is coming soon.

http: //webcanada0.tripod.com: Games (like the un-Canadian Sesame Street character test) are an added attraction.

www.webcity.ca: Check out games, horoscopes, e-greetings.

www.canadianeh.com: Dedicated to promoting all things Canadian.

www.canadiancontent.net: Weather, commentary and other info. -------------------------- Word of Mouse runs Saturdays. It covers interesting and informative destinations for Internet site-seers.
